Boys with Beer 
and Boisterous Birdsong
down Brunswick Road

shadows

I squint against the unaccustomed brightness
bird shadows flit across the pavement 

blackberries

Early blackberries dangle overhead down Essex Avenue,
I eat them greedily,
some are sweet and juicy, others so sharp they make my tongue curl.

Bears

Students come to the door, blanketed and grumpy,
Like bears disturbed early from their hibernation.

three boots

three purple welly boots on the doorstep
did someone hop home?

three cats

three cats perched on the windowsill
they all turn towards me as I open the gate next door
and dart away in unison around the corner of the house

three dogs

I cannot hear the doorbell
but inside three dogs respond 
with a cacophony of barks, yaps and whines

leaf

A blustery January day
brings down a huge desiccated sycamore leaf
it crash landed and skidded to a halt at my feet

baby birds

a clutch of sparrowlings
hesitate on the path
unsure which parent to follow
